The Best Time to Buy a TV, Laptop or Phone in the UK
When to buy tech in the UK for the best price: Black Friday, January sales, new model launches, and how to check a deal is genuine.
Tech prices move in fairly predictable patterns through the year. If you can be flexible about when you buy, timing your purchase around sales and new model launches can save you a noticeable amount on a TV, laptop or phone.
The big UK sales events
- Black Friday and Cyber Monday (27 and 30 November in 2026): usually the biggest discounts of the year on TVs, laptops, headphones, smart home devices and gaming. Many retailers start their offers earlier in November. See our Black Friday 2026 guide.
- Boxing Day and January sales: good for clearing older stock and post-Christmas reductions.
- Amazon Prime Day (usually in the summer): competing retailers often run their own tech sales at the same time.
Buy when the new model arrives
When a manufacturer launches a new model, the previous one is often reduced to clear stock. If you do not need the very latest features, last year’s model can be excellent value.
- Phones: major new smartphones are usually announced at set times each year, and older models typically drop in price soon after.
- TVs: new TV ranges usually arrive in spring, which is often a good time to find the outgoing models reduced.
- Laptops: new ranges often appear around the start of the academic year, alongside student and back-to-school offers.
How to make sure a deal is genuine
- Check the price history. A “was” price is not always what something normally sells for. Look at the price over the last few months.
- Compare the exact model number. Retailers sometimes sell slightly different versions of the same product, which makes comparing prices tricky.
- Look for a discount code too. Some retailers let you add a code to a sale price or offer extra discounts for signing up to their emails.
- Consider the total cost. Include delivery, installation, recycling of your old item and any accessories you need.
