How to Compare Broadband Deals

What to look at when comparing broadband packages, including speed, contract length, setup costs and total price.

Broadband deals can look confusing because providers price contracts differently, bundle in extras, and change their offers frequently. Comparing a few key details rather than just the headline monthly price makes it much easier to find a package that suits your household and your budget.

Look at the whole contract cost, not just the monthly price

A low monthly price can be offset by a large upfront or activation fee, or by a price increase partway through the contract. Multiply the monthly cost by the contract length and add any set-up charges to get a realistic total, then compare that figure between providers rather than the advertised monthly rate alone.

Check the speed you actually need

Providers often promote their fastest available speed, which may be far more than a typical household needs. Consider how many people and devices use your connection at once, and whether you regularly stream, game or work from home, before paying extra for a speed tier you may not use.

Understand mid-contract price rises

Many broadband contracts include an annual price increase, often linked to inflation, which is applied automatically partway through the term. This is worth checking before you sign up, since a competitive starting price can become less attractive once a scheduled increase is factored in.

Factor in exit and switching terms

If you are currently in a contract, check your notice period and any early exit fees before switching. Many new providers can arrange your switch for you, but it is worth confirming there is no overlap in charges between your old and new contracts.
